Khanjira - ASN Swamy

Started off the concert with “Gajavadana” in Sriranjani ragam a beautiful Papanasam Sivan composition. Kalpanaswarams added beauty for this song. Next was Kannada ragam alapanai followed by “Sri mathrubhootam” kriti. He also took up kalpanaswarams. Somehow have a liking for this ragam.
Lovely detailed alapanai for Pantuvarali ragam. Blessed to hear such great one. Kriti taken up was “Appa Rama Bhakti”. He sang 2 charanams for this song. We are so used to hearing “Kapivaridhi” after the anupallavi. He sang “Lakshmi Devi” (Charanam 1) and “Kapivaridhi” (Charanam 3). Nereval at “Lakshmi Devi valacuna” was like having diamonds on your gold jewellery. Such a rich voice. Took up kalpanaswarams with Lakshmi Devi only. Violinst support was too good for this kriti. A big round of applause from the audience after this kriti. Next was margahindolam ragam with the kriti “Chalamelara”.
The main ragam for the evening was kedaragowla. Aaha it’s been a long time I have not heard this ragam. The swinging alapanai made me think what’s going to be the kriti he going to take up!!!! But to our surprise after the alapanai he took tanam for the same ragam. Aaha such a blissful moment thinking RTP in kedaragowla. Equally supported by Srinidhi sir on violin. Pallavi lines were “Venu Gana Lolam Kripala Valam Bhajegopalam balam”. No ragamalika kalpanaswarams to keep our ears open and guessing the ragams. He finished off kalpanaswarams with the same ragam. Almost one hour RTP was smoothing to our ears. RTP was set to Khanda Jati Truputa tala. Yesterday we had thunder and rains in our area. Plus thundering thaniavartanam making me guess where is this thunder from? Lovely co-ordination among Praveen sir and Swamy sir.
A short alapanai for Yaman Kalyani followed by “Krishna nee begane baro”.
Next was a meaningful Kannada song of “Sri Sri Swayamprakasha Abhinava Ramananda Saraswati Swamiji” in the ragam bowli. After this he said he would end the concert but audience requested him to sing a thillana. So he sang Sindhubhairavi ragam Thillana with which he finished the concert.
All on the stage were lions in their on field. Such a lovely Sunday evening spent by listening to wonderful concert despite the rains.
